The Netherlands
is one of the few countries that did achieve full control of
polio with exclusive use of IPV.
In 1956 the RIVM, at that time the vaccine Task of the Rijks
Instituut voor Volksgezondheid, RIV, and later that of the RIVM,
started with the development of IPV vaccine. Although the polio
vaccine initially used in the country had been purchased
abroad, by the end of 1958 sufficient DTP-IPV combination vaccine
had been produced for a trial to be held in the Netherlands. The
RIVM had used new processing technology that it had developed
itself. The new combination vaccine was ready to be introduced on a
national scale. In 1962 the combined vaccine replaced the separate
DTP (Diphteria, Tetanus, Pertussis ) and IPV vaccines in the
national vaccination schedule.
