Poliovirus is a highly contagious human virus which attacks the
nerve tissues in the brain and spinal cord. The virus is a
single-stranded RNA virus from the family Picornaviridae and genus
enterovirus. The poliovirus (PV) lives in the throat and intestinal
tract. There are three subtypes of polio (type 1, 2 and 3) and many
strains of each type; type 1 is the most virulent and common.
Polio can be spread by a number of ways. The virus enters
through the mouth and multiplies in the throat and gastrointestinal
tract then moves into the bloodstream and is carried to the central
nervous system where it replicates and destroys the motor neuron
cells.
