OPV is still the vaccine of choice for eradiation of wild
poliomyelitis. However, after global polio eradication there will
be no longer a necessity to tolerate Vaccine-Associated Paralytic
Poliomyelitis (VAPP) as a consequence of vaccination with OPV. It’s
clear that the demand for IPV will increase especially after OPV
cessation.
After eradication of poliomyelitis access to live polioviruses will
be highly restricted. The use of the attenuated Sabin virus instead
of the wild polio strains is preferred; the risks associated with
containment failures are less for Sabin-IPV.
